Greening the Supply Chain

Two major clothing retailers, Bennetton and Limited Brands (the parent company of Victoria's Secret), have signed on to Greenpeace's "Detox Campaign", pledging to remove all hazardous chemicals and waste from their supply chains by 2020. The companies join the ranks of Puma, H&M and Nike that have also joined the campaign.

Supply chains can no longer be measured simply by responsiveness and cost -- consumers are becoming increasingly savvy when it comes to where their products come from and what they demand from suppliers. Quality and price point are no longer the only factors that consumers look at when making purchase decisions. Understanding how these changing expectations and demands will impact suppliers and their supply chain decisions will be interesting to watch in the coming years. How will companies balance these new emerging factors such as security and sustainability with the more traditional supply chain decisions?
